Friday Programme

  • Registration, tea/coffee and a chance to network

  • Dr David Blane, Academic Lead for Deep End Scotland, will discuss how the Deep End movement began in Glasgow and their experiences so far.

  • Prof Mogens Vestergaard, Project Leader for Deep End Denmark will discuss the Danish Deep End experience

  • Professor Susan Smith, Co-Ordinator for Deep End Ireland and found member, and Dr Bríd Shanahan, Clinical Lead for Deep End Ireland will discuss the Irish Deep End experience to date

  • A panel discussion between Dr Blane, Professor Vestergaard and Professor Smith discussion the similarities and differences in experiences across three different health care systems.

  • A panel discussion with the Deep End Ireland patient advisory group

  • Professor Caroline Mitchell, Professor of General Practice Research at Keele University will discuss her experiences of carrying out inclusive research

  • Three choices of workshops from 14.35 - 15.20

  • Dr David Blane, Academic Lead with Deep End Scotland and Dr Anna Beug, Deep End GP and programme director of the North Dublin GP training scheme will run an interactive workshop covering challenges and tips for training at the Deep End

  • Professor Jo-Hanna Ivers, Associate Professor in Addiction at Trinity College and Dr Edel McGinnity, founding member of Deep End Ireland will run a workshop outlining Prof Ivers research into addiction recovery and Dr McGinnity’s Deep End experience of managing patients with addiction into recovery.

  • Dr Aoibhinn Walsh, Consultant in Paediatric Inclusion Health at Temple St Children’s hospital will run an interactive workshop covering what GPs need to look out for in vulnerable children and how to manage them.

  • Musician and Deep End GP, Dr Eoin Monahan will give an introduction to a beautiful piece of music he has composed titled “Deep End”.

  • Professor Andrea Williamson, founding member of Deep End Scotland and Professor of General Practice and Inclusion Health at the University of Glasgow, will speak about her important research into the topic of “missingness” which she has defined as repeated tendency not to take up offers of care that has a negative impact on the person and their life chances.

Saturday Programme

  • Deep End GP Dr Anna Beug will expand on the article she wrote that was recently published in the BJGP about the art of “making mosaics” or picking up pieces of a patient’s story gradually over time in general practice.

  • Choose one of three options for workshops. The workshop on use of interpreters will be repeated once.

  • Dr Angy Skuce, former medical director of Safetynet and Dr Charlotte Coyle , GP with Safetynet.

  • Dr Bridget Kiely, research lead with Deep End Ireland, Dr Máirtín Ó’Maoláin, clinical lecturer in RCSI, and Laura Prodan, professional interpreter will run an interactive workshop about effective use of interpreters in Deep End general practice.

  • Professor Susan Smith, Co-Ordinator and founding member of Deep End Ireland and Dr Patrick O’Donnell, academic lead for Deep End Ireland will run an interactive workshop on their experiences of carrying out research in Deep End practices in Ireland

  • Dr Bridget Kiely, research lead with Deep End Ireland, Dr Máirtín Ó’Maoláin, clinical lecturer in RCSI, and Laura Prodan, professional interpreter will run an interactive workshop about effective use of interpreters in Deep End general practice.

  • Dr Mary Favier, founding member of START and Deep End GP and Dr Bríd Shanahan, clinical lead for Deep End Ireland will run a workshop covering aspects of women’s health in Deep End practices, particularly provision of early medical abortion and menopause care.

  • A number of Irish Deep End GPs will discuss how they have used the Social Deprivation grant in innovative ways.
